Riedenburg, also called the gateway to the old town, is the part of Salzburg that spreads out around the Rainberg and borders on the "Leopoldskroner Weiher" landscape area and the Mönchsberg.

Riedenburg is a fantastic residential area and one of the most sought-after and popular inner city locations due to its good and close connection to the old town. At the same time, Riedenburg also offers a quick way into the countryside and characterizes itself as a predominantly quiet residential area.

From cows, goats, geese, ducks and flamingos

"From Riedenburg you can reach the top of Salzburg's Mönchsberg in just a few minutes on foot, with its many small paths off the beaten tourist track, past farms with cows and calves in the pastures (yes, on the Mönchsberg!), in Salzburg's old town with the Getreidegasse or at the Leopoldskroner Weiher, a true natural jewel of Salzburg. A walk around the pond - no matter what time of day or season - is an absolute 'must-do' for Salzburgers. The pond shows all colors from emerald green to turquoise blue depending on how the sunlight falls. And in the fall, when the deep, leafy orange glows and the autumnal play of colors is reflected in the water, it's more than kitschy beautiful at this magical place," enthuses Michael Denkstein, who also knows how to marvel at flamingos in the immediate vicinity. An insider tip for walks with children.

"In the immediate vicinity of the Leopoldskron pond, a little hidden away, is the popular destination, the flamingo colony at the St. Peter ponds in Leopoldskron. But the real stars of this very special mini-animal garden - at least for the children - are not the flamingos, but the numerous other animals. Cows with their calves, mother pigs with their piglets, goats, ducks, geese, chickens and turkeys live peacefully side by side here. Even if not the most spectacular animals live here, children stand fascinated at the fence and watch the hustle and bustle. And during a leisurely walk around the idyllic pond, one encounters trusting waterfowl such as mallards, gray geese, majestic swans and also exotic Mandarin ducks," the Salzburg native knows with heart and soul to report with a "wink" and adds his "declaration of love" to the pond: "When the goose and duck moms show their offspring, perhaps one should come here again in the spring. Or even in winter, when the frozen pond invites you to go ice skating."

The historic center around St. Erhard's Church, just below the Fortress Hill is part of the World Heritage Site of the City of Salzburg. As a balance to the lively city life, the direct proximity to numerous local recreation areas is also particularly high.
